My right to vote allows me to participate in the political process and advance the agenda that best represents my values. On August 26, 1920, most women had their citizenship affirmed but when I consider this day, I cannot forget that African American women were not included. It is one thing to fight discrimination based on gender. It is an entirely different burden when your fight includes gender and race. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 – forty years later, would then extend the promise of country to all women. I celebrate the ancestors that stayed the course to bring us thus far along the way.

The journey continues…
