The World of ESG: What Every In-House Counsel Should Know

While ESG simply stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance, how a company addresses ESG is not so simple. A company’s ESG initiatives, or lack thereof, are often viewed as indicative of its ethical and cultural foundations. Investors and potential investors often evaluate how a company manages ESG, and employees and business partners look to the company’s ESG programs to learn the company’s priorities. Recently, the SEC proposed comprehensive and complicated rules regarding disclosures public companies must make regarding ESG. With such a strong emphasis, from many different stakeholders, on how a company manages ESG, all in-house counsel should be aware of the basic principles of an ESG program.
